    About Albariño wine

Albariño is the name of the variety of white grape that gives the same name to the wine elaborated from it throughout the north-western region of the Iberian peninsula, namely Galicia and Portugal. Specifically, this DO wine is produced in the region of the Rias Baixas, a basin formed by the six estuaries that flow from the western coast to the centre of Galicia, and specially in the town of Cambados. With a  distinctive aroma proximate to that of the French grape Petite Manseng, of which its said to be a variety of the same family, the Albariño wine suggests peach and apricot with a characteristic acidity blend having alcohol levels between 11.5% and 12.5%.

Enjoy a two-day tour around the best quality wineries of Rías Baixas, close to Santiago de Compostela, on our Albariño Tour.

    Day 1 Pazo de Galegos

In 1980 a small wine producing family started the recuperation of autochthonous vineyards and new plantations, inaugurating ten years later what today is known as the ‘Pazo de Galegos’ winery. The reformed house was at one time home to D. Antonio López Ferreiro (1837 – 1910) canon of the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, discoverer of the tomb of St. James and a renown literary in Galicia.

The eight hectares of vineyards are more than 30 years old and combine a selection of grapes, that will be collected by hand and cooled for six hours previous to fermentation on a temperature controlled room. The wines produced are of strong character and personality after long dedication and fine treatment.

Enjoy a night and meal at this enchanting rural house situated on the route of DO wine of Rías Baixas.  Stroll through its centenary gardens and vineyards, and be guided into the fine arts of DO wine production on a familiar winery at the very heart of the lands of Albariño.

    Day 2 Lagar de Costa

‘Lagar de Costa’ is a familiar winery with now three generations dedicated to the care of its vineyards and production of its fine wine. The construction of the winery is more than a century old, perfectly conserved and reformed preserving its stone and wood, and combines the modern technology for a perfect blend on wine production. Surrounded by the vineyards and with views of the A Toxa Island, the guest house offers a natural and familiar environment with all kinds of comforts to feel at home.

The six hectares of vineyards, more than 50 years old, are enclaved in between the Umia and O Grove seas, a land declared as Wetland of International Importance and the nature protected area Red Natura 2000, a place definitely worth a visit.

A few minutes from the town of Combados, you will have dinner at the Yayo Daporta, a Michelin starred restaurant now also awarded with two Repsol Suns. The degustation menu will depend on seasonality but this is a good example of what to expect:

    Two temperature Albariño cocktail

Cauliflower, common cockles and red wine mousse Saffron fish consomé, with Rias Baixas estuary mollusks and algae ravioli stuffed with king crab Veal tripe stewed with cod stripe on pil-pil souce

Xurel grilled on its juice, sautéed green beans Panko coated hake, its stewed spawn and jalapeño chilli mayonnaise Roasted goat kid with potato soufflé and thyme aroma White chocolate soup with red fruits ice cream and sesame biscuit Complete this relaxing experience at the cradle of the DO wine route of Rías Baixas visiting the winery and enjoying this marvellous natural enclave.
